Ana Ot: Embrace Patience

KidLit Craft is back with another Snack-Sized Author Interview. In this series, we ask authors five quick questions that give us insight into their craft and process. Today we’re talking with author Ana Ot.

Ana’s debut picture book, The Heart Never Forgets (Atheneum/Simon & Schuster), was awarded a starred review in Publishers Weekly. Ana holds an M.A. in Writing from Johns Hopkins. Through her work as a committee member on a charitable literary fund, Ana helps children around the world get connected to diverse and inclusive books.

Welcome, Ana!

Question 1: What's your writing superpower?

My writing superpower lies in my ability to dive deeply into revisions. I approach picture book revisions with boundless energy and take the time to review each version as many times as needed. With each round of edits, I dissect my work from every angle, searching for opportunities to elevate the story and ensure that each iteration is stronger than the last. Reading my story countless times isn’t overwhelming; every tweak brings me closer to the heart of a story that I hope connects and resonates with my target audience.

Question 2: What’s an element of craft you explored in your latest project and what tips can you share with other authors for growing in their use of that particular element?

I enjoy exploring the craft of imagery—writing prose that paints vivid pictures and resonates emotionally. Descriptive imagery immerses readers, drawing them into the sensory and emotional world of a story. It also serves as a cornerstone for many other aspects of writing. I advise everyone to take their time with imagery. Don’t rush it. Let it unfold by crafting each phrase with care until the scene breathes life on the page. Thoughtful imagery has the power to transform a reader’s experience and leave a story lingering long after the book has been closed.

Question 3: If you could travel back in time, what advice would you give yourself as a new author?

I would tell myself to embrace patience and trust the process. Publishing is a journey, not a sprint. It’s okay to wait for all the moving pieces to come together at the right time. Meanwhile, focus on what truly matters: writing. Keep creating, keep dreaming, and trust that your hard work will come together in the best possible way. Everyone has their own perfect moment to shine.

Question 4: What inspires you as a writer in your career?

I’m inspired by the world’s desire for compelling stories—the way people connect with them and how they can change perspectives and lives. This keeps me motivated to dream up new stories that touch the hearts of young readers. Knowing that my stories could resonate with a child’s imagination and contribute to their love of reading is inspiring.

Question 5: What’s one book you think every kidlit author should read?

Rather than naming a single book, I recommend revisiting your favorite childhood reads. These stories shaped you as a reader, and revisiting them as an author offers a new lens through which to uncover their magic. You’ll find hidden gems that can influence your writing craft in delightful ways.

Bonus Question: What can fans look forward to next?

My book, The Heart Never Forgets, is now available for purchase and has received a starred review from Publishers Weekly! It’s a sweet story about a young girl honoring her grandfather’s memory during a vibrant masquerade festival. I’m also excited to share that I have a new picture book coming out in 2026, so stay tuned for more to come!
